On Saturday morning, United Way hosted a Halloween-themed Family Fall Festival to promote early child literacy in Kern County.

“We wanted to do something for the community to go to and be safe, ” said Sydney Cullen, United Way of Central Eastern California marketing assistant.

1,000 bags of candy and books were given out by volunteers to families at 5405 Stockdale Highway. All volunteers wore PPE and socially distanced by staying 6 feet away from drivers and families.

“When a child is given a brand-new book in their hands, it is an investment in their future. We know that if children have a love for books, it will lead to a love for reading, which will lead to greater academic success down the road,” Rachel Hoetker, Education Manager at United Way Kern County said in a news release.
