BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — While some school districts are still deciding how they will proceed with social distanced learning, students are still in need of supplies. 23ABC is sponsoring the United Way of Central Eastern California’s back to school drive, a way for students to get the supplies they need to be successful in school

23ABC’s Bayne Froney explains how this drive is beneficial for those in need, especially during the time of COVID-19.

Even though learning may look different in the fall, United Way wants everyone to know that school supplies are still essential. Just because students are set to start school virtually doesn’t mean traditional school supplies aren’t needed.

“We know that school is about to start in a few weeks and even though with some of the districts starting virtually, there are still some materials that they are going to need at home,” explained Gabriel Alvarez, marketing director for United Way of Central Eastern California.

On July 22nd 23ABC has teamed with the United Way for a back to school drive from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. The goal? To collect much need school supplies. Keep in mind the process of dropping off supplies will follow social distancing guidelines.

“We’ll be out here in the parking lot. You can drive by. We will have volunteers and staff out here ready to get the items, backpacks, school supplies. You don’t have to get out of your vehicle,” said Alvarez.

With more families in need this year due to the pandemic, United Way is still looking for donations. Some supplies they are asking for include notebooks, pencils, glue, binders, rulers, and backpacks.

After the drive, the United Way will be hosting a backpack give away on August 7th, where students can come and pick up a backpack filled with new school supplies. In addition, during the August 7th event, the United Way of Central Eastern California will also be providing:

  • Immunizations: for children needing to get their required shots before starting school
  • Dental Hygiene Kits: to support and promote oral hygiene with our kids
  • Food and Snacks
  • Face Masks: As mandated by the State of California, we will be providing face masks to children and their families, in order for them to enter businesses to get their essentials

“They need these tools and they need supplies to be able to accomplish the assignments that are given to them. And you know when any child, when they receive anything new, especially a new backpack that is decorated and so forth, I mean it puts a smile on their face. It helps them forget a little bit about what has been going on,” said Alvarez.

Alvarez wants those who are able to give know that the United Way is grateful for their donations and their help to keep Kern County strong.

You can drop off supplies at 5405 Stockdale Highway from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, July 22nd. You can also donate money to the back to school drive on their website.
